CoinMarketCap announced its acquisition of CoinGlass on September 25, bringing a derivatives-focused data provider into the crypto market-data business. The purchase price was not disclosed in the announcement.

The company-issued release says CoinGlass will retain its brand and team. It also says existing website, app, free access and API pricing will remain unchanged.

The acquisition broadens the data mix

CoinGlass provides information such as open interest, funding rates, liquidations and options activity. Those measures describe derivatives markets and answer different questions from a simple spot-price quote.

The announcement concerns data and analytics. It is not an acquisition of an exchange for executing customers’ trades.

For existing users, the immediate point is continuity under the stated terms. Longer-term product integration and any future changes will need to be assessed when they are actually announced.

More data still needs interpretation

A liquidation estimate or funding-rate chart depends on its venue coverage, definitions and update process. Combining services under one owner does not make those measures interchangeable.

Readers comparing charts should inspect the source exchanges, time interval and instrument type. A spot-price movement and a derivatives position measure can be related without describing the same event.

Our proof-of-reserves guide makes a similar point about financial data: first establish what a metric or report covers, then decide what conclusion it supports.

The acquisition expands CoinMarketCap’s product scope, but the announcement alone does not establish a change in the quality or completeness of any individual dataset.
